The National Youth of the Year Program is designed to promote and recognize service to Club and community, academic performance and contributions to family and spiritual life. Competition begins with each Club selecting a Youth of the Year who receives a certificate and medallion then enters the state competition. State winners receive a plaque and $1,000 scholarship then enter the regional competition. Each of the five regional winners receives a $10,000 scholarship and enters the national competition held in Washington, DC. The National Youth of the Year receives an additional $15,000 scholarship, totaling $26,000 in scholarships, and is installed by the President of the United States.

Darrius Shaw

Darrius Shaw, a 12 year member of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Dallas, was named 2010 Southwest Regional Youth of the Year by Boys & Girls Clubs of America (BGCA). A senior at the School of Science & Engineering - Townview High School, Darrius has been an active member of the National Society of Black Engineers, the Texas Civil Air Patrol, serves as President and Team Captain of the Science and Engineering Bowl Team. He was one of 14 seniors selected at his school to participate in the Peer to Peer mentoring program, assisting freshmen students with the transition from middle to high school. He also serves as a volunteer at his Club (Oak Cliff Boys & Girls Club) where he is President of the Young Leaders Keystone Club, a member of Dallas Elevators powered by Coca-Cola and is active in the Collegiate STEPS program. In addition, he participates in community volunteer projects including local recycling roundups for the City of Dallas. Overall, Darrius has logged 225 volunteer hours in the past 12 months.
“I owe a great deal of my development and my confidence to my Boys & Girls Club. For this reason, I am honored to represent the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Dallas and will do so proudly.” Darrius’ journey began when he was named 2010 Youth of the Year for Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Dallas in February of 2010 and received a $4,000 scholarship from Coca-Cola followed by winning the North Texas Youth of the Year competition where he received $2,000 from the Boys & Girls Clubs of North Texas Area Council. “Darrius represents thousands of successful young men and women who are members of the Boys & Girls Club. He is a true leader and an inspiration to anyone he has the opportunity to meet. We are very proud of him for the challenges he has overcome, the goals he has achieved and the future he will make great,” said Charles English, President/CEO of Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Dallas.
Darrius plans to attend New York University or Texas Tech University in the fall and major in engineering.
