On Saturday, April 25, 2015, BGCD hosted the 14th annual Math Blazers event at the Grand Prairie Boys & Girls Club. Approximately 100 NBC 5/KXAS and Telemundo 39/KXTX employees and other volunteers dedicated their time to judge more than 300 semi-finalists from 14 area Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Dallas locations. Math Blazers gives all Club members the opportunity to challenge themselves in a fun yet competitive environment that promotes teamwork, a sense of self-awareness, and improvement in arithmetic and reasoning skills.
Club members in 3rd through 12th grade competed in several events such as Beat the Clock, Math Marathon and Teen Challenge. Volunteers supervised the five math competitions, a hands-on STEM building project for the youth and built bicycles, which were used as prizes for top winners. Each Club also had the chance to win the Math Blazers 2015 Championship Award, which was awarded to Williams Prep and Dunbar Elementary. The East Dallas Club received the Most Spirited Club award, which was given to the Club with the most creative banner, club support and loudest cheering.
The successful day ended with a generous donation as NBC 5 President and General Manager Tom Ehlmann and Comcast Corporation Vice President of Community Investment and President of the Comcast Foundation Charisse R. Lillie presented a $25,000 check on behalf of NBC 5, Telemundo 39 and Comcast Corporation to the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Dallas. NBC 5’s and Telemundo 39 participated in the event as part of Comcast Cares Day, the nation’s largest single-day corporate volunteer effort and part of Comcast NBCUniversal’s year-round commitment to service.
