On Saturday, April 23, 2022 Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Dallas crowded into Grand Prairie Boys & Girls Club for the much anticipated Math Blazer competition. Hundreds of our Club members were hard at work sharpening their math expertise in preparation for the annual spring event.

Math Blazers is an annual spring event at BGCD which allows 3rd– 12th-grade students to display their skills in a math competition that covers specific skills tied directly to Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) objectives at each grade level. Contestants of the competition were judged on correct answers and the speed at which answers were given.

The day started with a hearty breakfast and an encouraging pep-talk given by each Club director to their team of Math Blazers. All of our Blazers showed their spirit with matching T-shirts, creative banners, and catchy chants to inspire their teammates to do well in the competition.

The first competition of the day was Blazing Math, where each club member was challenged to complete a booklet of math problems as fast as they could while math monitors timed their speed. No coaches or Club directors were allowed in the room while members completed the Blazing Math Challenge, so members had to rely on their own knowledge and problem-solving skills.

In the Math Blazers Relay, however, the Club directors and coaches were able to encourage their team as they completed a circuit of physical challenges, and complete a difficult math problem, before running as fast as they could back to the finish line to tag in the next teammate.

The competition ended with an award ceremony where Club members were recognized for their hard work and great performances in each category.
