East Dallas Boys & Girls Club member Almira Akinpelu was announced as the Youth of the Year for BGCD in January. Almira became a member of the West Dallas Boys & Girls Club at the age of 6 until its closure. Since then, she has belonged to the East Dallas Boys & Girls Club.
Almira actively participates in Collegiate STEPS, SMART Girls and Keystone Club.She also serves as a Youth STEM Ambassador for Imagine Science. Recently, as part of the requirements to receive the Girl Scout Gold Award, she founded a book club for nine-year-old girls at the East Dallas Club where she creates all of the lesson plans and worksheets, guides members in their book selections and serves as the book club moderator.
Almira states, “I grew up in the Boys & Girls Club, and without the constant encouragement to not only excel as a student, but as a well-rounded individual, I wouldn’t be as successful and prepared to enter college and the world.”
Almira is in the top 10% of her class and a three-year member of the National Honor Society. Dedicated to excelling in her studies, she received an award for academic excellence in Pre-AP Physics. She plans to study animal physical therapy at Centenary College of Louisiana in Shreveport after high school graduation. Her next Youth of the Year competition is February 20, 2016 in Austin, where she will vie for the title of North Texas Area Council Youth of the Year.
