Oak Cliff Boys & Girls Club Learning Center

Partnerships are a large part of what it takes to build great futures for our Club kids and Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Dallas has found a great ally in the Dallas Mavericks and the Mavs Foundation. From creating learning spaces at our Oak Cliff Boys & Girls Club to recognizing our outstanding Club members with a VIP treatment during a home game, the Dallas Mavericks have proven their dedication to empowering Club kids, furthering our mission to enable youth to reach their full potential and giving kids great moments to remember for the rest of their lives.

Last week, the Dallas Mavericks and the Mavs Foundation kicked off a great summer by stopping by Oak Cliff Boys & Girls Club to unveil a brand-new tech room. The renovation project included new flooring, storage, Mavs-themed décor, and new computers, decking out an awesome learning space and tech room.

The reveal included a tour of the new space led by the D-Town Crew, Mavs Man mascot, and Mavs Foundation board member Darlise Harrison. Members were able to log onto their new computers and play a trivia game with the D-Town Crew, then enjoy ice cream sandwiches provided by Pokey O’s Ice Cream Shop.

“This is only the beginning,” Mavs CEO Cynt Marshall said. “We know the future of the Mavericks is bright, and so it should be for the kids of our community.”

The completed renovation and celebration were a perfect way to begin summer as BGCD has started launching Summer Brain Gain – a summer learning loss prevention program integrate into the traditional summer camp schedule for our Club members. With better access to new technology, experiences, and ideas, our Club members have even more opportunities to combat summer learning loss and arrive fully prepared for the coming school year.

Mavericks GEMs Mental Wellness Program

In May, the Mavericks GEMs (Girls Empowered by Mavericks) program, along with doctors from UT Southwestern stopped by one of our Clubs to lead a mental health workshop with interactive mental health activities for 50 of our Club members. The workshop was designed to empower and equip girls with healthy wellness tactics and embrace who they are.

In the workshop, our girls were taught how to identify and label their emotions. They were shown healthy coping mechanisms and discussed the benefits of journaling and meditation. Doctors from UT Southwestern explained their job duties to the group and discussed the many great careers in health and wellness.

After the discussion, each girl was given a journal to write down their own thoughts regarding mental wellness and was allowed to share their ideas with the group. They also discussed how to identify stress that has manifested in the body and how they can alleviate that stress with easy-to-find items such as rubber balloons and rice.

Check out a recap of the GEMs workshop below.

Coach J-Kidd for the Win!

Beginning in March 2022, Coach Jason Kidd pledged to donate $5,000 for every Dallas Mavericks home game won! The challenge earned $75,000, reflecting each of the Mavericks’ 15 home game wins. Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Dallas was one of three local organizations to receive these funds earned in the J-Kidd for the Win pledge by the Mavs Foundation plus money raised in support of Coach Kidd’s pledge.

We’d like to thank Coach Jason Kidd and the Mavericks Foundation for their dedication and investment in building great futures for our Club members.

“I thank the Dallas Mavericks for joining me in turning wins on the court into wins for the kids in the Dallas-Fort Worth community,” said Jason Kidd.

Mavericks MVP Program with Coca-Cola

In April, Coca-Cola along with the Mavericks invited four rockstar Club members to participate in the 2022 Sprite/Dallas Mavericks MVP Program. This wonderful program rewarded our selected High School Club members who have gone above and beyond the call of duty in community service, physical health, and education with suite seats and MVP treatment during a home game at the American Airlines Center.

During halftime, the Dallas Mavericks recognized our four excellent Club Members. Each member was able to walk down the court and be individually recognized by Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban.

In addition to recognizing our outstanding Club members, Sprite also donated 33 Sprite Zone game tickets, a game meal, and a Mavs t-shirt to other Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Dallas Cub members who excelled in the program.

Thank you, Coca-Cola and the Dallas Mavericks, for recognizing and investing in our Club kids and giving them great moments to remember.
