Brain Gain was in full swing this summer at all BGCD locations! The program is comprised of one-week modules with fun, themed activities for elementary school, middle school and high school students. Each module takes a project-based learning approach and youth engage in a process of learning through discovery, creative expression, group work and a final project.
Brain Gain guards against summer learning loss. It is estimated that low-income students experience a two-month learning deficit in the summer while their middle-class peers make slight gains. As a result of this program, participants develop higher-order thinking skills while staying on track for the coming school year. Highlights of this year’s program were “Ew, Gross!” – making dirt worms in cup and learning “gross” facts and “Wanna Play” – learning geometry through sports module.
Special thanks to Hitachi Consulting and our many other volunteers that assisted in facilitating Brain Gain.
